Special Announcements:
We are very proud to announce that two of our members have received prestigious honorary URSI awards.
The URSI John Howard Dellinger Gold Medal has been awarded to Alan Rogers of MIT Haystack Observatory, with the following citation:
"For his outstanding contributions to instrumentation in radio astronomy and its use to make fundamental discoveries about interstellar masers, superluminal expansion of quasars, deuterium abundance in the galaxy, and plate tectonics."
The Medal will be handed over during the Opening Ceremony of the URSI General Assembly in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 10 August 2008 at 3 p.m. I hope many of you will be able to attend to honour Alan's achievement.
The Balthasar van der Pol Gold Medal has been awarded to Jack Welch (University of California at Berkeley) with the following citation:
"Pioneer of
millimeter wavelength interferometry to investigate astronomical objects
ranging from solar system planets to galaxies at the edge of the
Universe with spectral and angular resolution."
The Medal will be
handed over during the Opening Ceremony of the URSI General Assembly in
Chicago, Illinois, USA on 10 August 2008 at 3 p.m. I
hope many of you will be able to attend to honour Jack's achievement
(note that there will be additional papers in the J4 Terahertz session Tuesday afternoon from
Gordon Stacy, Rolf Guston, Jonathan Kawamura and Chris Walker)

Job openings
There is a position of Domain Specialist in Signal Processing in the Central Design Integration Team. The CDIT is funded by the PrepSKA program. Under the direction of the International Project Engineer, Peter Dewdney, the CDIT and R&D specialists in the national and regional programs will, over the next 4 years, generate the SKA design for the first phase of construction, and an implementation plan for construction of the full SKA at low and mid-band frequencies. The successful candidate will play a key role in the system design in the crucial area of signal processing. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a good understanding of the issues involved and a desire to be centrally involved in this global project. Further details can be found at http://www.manchester.ac.uk/jobs/academicThe Remote Sensing Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is seeking postdoctoral applications. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out innovative research programs in 1. Any area of astrophysicswhere existing or planned low-frequency radio observations (e.g., with [E]VLA, VLBA, Arecibo, GMRT, GBT, LWA, LOFAR) may contribute; 2. Radio astronomy hardware development, such as antenna and receiver design and development, digital signal processing, or radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation techniques; or 3. Imaging and calibrationalgorithm development for the emerging suite of telescopes, including the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) and the EVLA. Contact Joseph Lazio Joseph.Lazio@nrl.navy.mil for more information. There are two openings for postdocs at Case Western Reserve University; one working on the South Pole Telescope, the other on the SPIDER balloon-borne instrument being built to search for B-mode polarization in the CMB. Please contact John Ruhl, ruhl@case.edu, for more information.
Approximately 20 engineering, software and astronomical positions are available at NRAO in Charlottesville, VA, Socorro, NM, Green Bank, WV and Santiago, Chile. The job descriptions and application information are listed in

Epoch of Reionization postdoc with the MWA. The successful candidate will help lead the EOR power spectrum analysis with me at the University of Washington, Seattle. Much of the work will focus on precision foreground subtraction, along with a significant role in instrument commissioning.
