Welcome to the web presence for the Astronomy Department at the California Institute of Technology. As a member of the Physics/Math/Astro Division, the primary mission of our department is twofold: the performance of cutting-edge research in astronomy and astrophysics, as well as the education of undergraduate and graduate students who will comprise the scientists and leaders of tomorrow. We also maintain a vibrant postdoctoral program. The members of our department engage in a wide variety of astronomical research projects, with topics ranging from the nearby stars to the most distant galaxies in the Universe. To help maintain these research efforts, our department supports an interest in several astronomical observatories, more information about which is available in these pages.
