The 60-inch Telescope

The Palomar Observatory's 60-inch (1.5 m) telescope (f/8.75), located in the
Oscar
Mayer Building, was dedicated in 1970. It was built to take some of the demand
off of the 200-inch Hale Telescope.
A wide range of astronomical research has been performed on this telescope.
Some of the topics include the study of gamma-ray bursts and the search for
planets around other stars. One of the most famous discoveries was that of the
first brown dwarf star. The 60-inch telescope was recently upgraded with a new ccd camera and
operating system that allows astronomers from Caltech and elsewhere to operate
it remotely. This program is known as the
Automated Transient Observing System.
