2008B Shared-Risk LGS-AO Guidelines

The observatory will support at least 20 LGS-AO shared-risk science nights at Palomar in semester 2008B. There are no blackout periods this semester. We encourage observers to review the guidelines below, and to discuss the particular needs of LGS proposals with Antonin Bouchez (Caltech) or Jenny Roberts (JPL) prior to submission.
  • Tip/tilt reference magnitude V < 17.5
  • Tip/tilt object to science target separation < 60".
  • Dithering/nodding will be supported in 5" steps (as NGS)
  • Target elevation > 45 degrees (FAA restriction).
  • Target declination < +65 degrees (LGS system design restriction).
  • Overheads: 45 min. at start of night, 10 min per target acquisition, 10s for dithers.

  • All targets must be submitted to abouchez@astro.caltech.edu at least 72 hr ahead of observations for clearance by the USAF Laser Clearinhouse.
  • Proposals should include an NGS, seeing-limited PHARO, or East-arm Echelle backup program.
  • Proposals will be reviewed for techincal feasibility (only) by a member of the AO team.
