Mounting SpectroCam on the Telescope

  1. Park the Cass Ring at 90 degrees using the Cass ring computer.

  2. Install the coffin at Cassegrain focus, with the largest face facing north. The guider cameras are usually installed after the dewar.

  3. Attach the hose from the ``big suck'' pump (under the south pier) to the adapter plate on the bottom of the Cass. cage. Turn on the pump and make sure the line is properly evacuated.

  4. Connect the white hose to the pump manifold in the Cass. cage.

  5. Remove the cover on the large face of the coffin.

  6. Install the SC-10 mounting bracket on the large face of the coffin. Use the 9 outer screw holes, use washers, and tighten the bolts securely to minimize flexure of the bracket. The inner screw holes are not needed.

  7. Remove the tops of the 4 micarda mounting blocks on the brackets.

  8. Remove the Co-Adder box, and the GSM box and its L-bracket from the dewar. The PClock box and its cables to the dewar should be left in place.

  9. Rotate the slurpee refill tube on the left LN2 fill port until the downward extension is toward the back of the dewar (side farthest from the window). The tube must be facing this way so it will be accessible after mounting the dewar on the telescope.

  10. When everything is ready for the dewar, close the hose pinch valve and remove the LN2 can pump. Bring the dewar to the observing floor. Do not under any circumstances leave the dewar unattended until the vacuum pumping is restored after mounting the instrument in the cage.

  11. Place the dewar and its cart on the hydraulic ram.

  12. Adjust the separation of the orange lift truck tines so they align with the paint marks on the lift truck rails.

  13. Position the lift truck tines under the dewar so that the dewar lines up with the arcs drawn on the tines, then raise the dewar and its cart together off the floor. Remove the four mounting bolts, then lower the dewar out of its mounting blocks. Watch that the lift truck chain does not hit the P-Clock box. Moving the handling cart away and off the ram.

  14. Raise the dewar and lift truck on the ram to the bottom of the Cass. cage. Then raise the lift truck forks using its hydraulic pump to bring the dewar high enough to fit in its mounting brackets. There is only about 1/4'' clearance above the dewar so be careful lifting it with the lift truck. See the authors of this manual for details!

  15. Replace the micarda mounting blocks and securely tighten the bolts. The block halves are labeled 1--4; be sure they are matched and oriented correctly.

  16. Carefully route the white hose up from under the dewar so that it has enough slack to permit rotation of the Cass. ring, then connect it to the LN2 fill port hose. Open the manifold valves first, then slowly open the hose pinch valve to restart pumping on the LN2.

  17. Lower and clear the ram of equipment, then re-install the Cass cage floor.

  18. Mount the blowoff meter on the west arm of the mounting bracket and connect the hose to the helium can. Keep the main neck and the refill tube connected with a Y fitting.

  19. Uncover the Flip Mirror and Dewar Window.

  20. Install the SC-10 electronics rack in the SW bay of the Cass. cage. Plug the rack power cord in the blue (UPS) power strip.

  21. Other Palomar and IRA equipment that is needed to support SC-10 are: the centerfield and offset guider cameras and cabling, including cables 15 & 16 to control the offset guider, the f/70 chopping secondary and electronics, both Quantexes, the autoguider, and (optionally) the f/70 tip-tilt support.
