Workstation and Common Desktop Environment Operation
This section covers basic operation of GRB, including basic UNIX commands, the
directory struture, etc. It is assumed that
GRB is set up as described in Chapter 2 and you are
ready to log in.
There are two SC-10 related accounts:
- scuser: Allows an observer to run the SC-10 programs.
- scman: For the SC-10 system manager, allowing access to source
code, etc.
To log in, simply type the desired account name at the GRB login
prompt, then supply the appropriate password. Consult one of the
Cornell or mountain staff personnel to get the current password.
Logging in starts the UNIX Common Desktop Environment.
To keep the screen neat as you work, you will want to move, resize and
perform other manipulations on windows. Some of the more common
operations are summarized here.
- Starting a new window: Move the arrow cursor to a blank part of
the screen (probably blue in color), and click the right mouse button. A
``pop-up'' menu will appear. Move the cursor to the program (or
submenu) that you want to run, and click to start the program or enter
the submenu.
- Setting the active window: Move the arrow cursor inside a window's
borders to make it the active window. You might have to click the
left mouse button on the window if someone has changed the defaults.
- Moving a window: Move the arrow cursor to the gray bar at the top
of a window (the title bar). Press the left mouse button and hold it
down, then move the mouse to drag the window to a new position.
- Resizing a window: Move the arrow to one of the boxes in the window
corners, where it will change to a circle. Press and hold the left
button, then drag the corner to resize the window. Placing the arrow
on the title bar and pressing the mouse button quickly twice
(double-clicking) stretches the window vertically to the full screen
height. Another double-click on the title bar returns the window to
its original size.
- Bring window to front: Press the Front key on the left of
the keyboard to bring hidden windows and icons at the location of the
arrow cursor into view. Clicking on the title bar also does this.
- Close window: Click on the downward-pointing arrow at the left end
of the title bar to shrink the window to an icon. Double-click on
the icon to see the window again.
- Quiting a window: Move arrow to title bar, then hold down the
right mouse button. A menu will appear. Move the arrow to the
Quit option and release button. Programs running in the window will
exit and the window will disappear. Notice the pop-up menu also has
options for closing (to icon), refreshing, etc.
CDE provides several types of general programs, or ``tools''.
Although use of these tools is not mandatory for using SC-10 (which
has its own custom programs), familiarity with some of them is useful.
Many of these tools can be activated from the main menu (which appears
when the right mouse button is depressed with the arrow cursor in a
blank screen area). One of the more important ones is:
- Terminal: (The default under the ``tools'' submenu.) Provides a
command-line interface for your favorite UNIX commands and programs.
- xterm : Similar to terminal, but with a TEK 4010 graphics terminal
capability. This can be accessed by typing "xterm" in a terminal window; it is what
IRAF needs to be run in to see graphical output from plotting
routines.
