Mount dewar and connect CCD

Once the CCD dewar has been pumped and cooled, the stinger should be installed in the dewar. The mountain staff should take care of this step. Then the CCD can be inverted and attached to the dewar plate of the instrument. First remove the remaining taped-on cover from the dewar plate. Make sure that the three dewar clamps on the dewar plate are loose; slide them outward as far as possible from the axis of the instrument. Working with at least one other person, then lift the dewar up to the dewar plate, positioning it within the slightly indented central area of the dewar plate. For the case of CCD #15, the dewar should be oriented with the saddlebag to the southeast, in order to obtain the normal N-E orientation on the observing computer display. This orientation is noted by a small label near the chip end of the dewar. Rotate the dewar to align it roughly; the orientation of the chip will be fine-tuned later (see Section A.7).

When the dewar is properly positioned, slide the three clamps in as far as possible and tighten in place. Double check that all of the clamp screws have been tightened firmly, and that the dewar rests flush in the indentation in the dewar plate. Use a flashlight to verify that the clamps are tightly positioned around the lip of the dewar. On the 60-inch telescope, pay particular attention to the one dewar clamp screw on CCD #15 that falls directly over the dewar connectors; you will probably need to use a pair of pliers to tighten that screw.

Figure 14: Two views of the Fabry-Perot instrument, fully installed on the 200-inch telescope. These views were taken on different observing runs; one used CCD #15 while the other used CCD #16. The 60-inch installation appears similar, with the notable exception that the shutter control box is not used.

Once the CCD is mounted on the telescope, the mountain staff will then connect the CCD cables and power up the CCD. The completely installed instrument should appear like those shown in Figure 14.
