Starting the night

 The observing assistant should open the dome as early as possible (i.e., once the sun isn't shining), weather permitting. The telescope should be pointed away from the shutter, or (even better) the mirror should be covered when the shutter is opened or closed, to guard against mirror damage from falling debris.
