Network Update: The T1 connection is UP at the 200" dome. There are new IP addresses for the workstations there.

There are now 4mm DAT drives available at both domes (on Rhea at the 200" and Thebe at the 60"). Additionally, Thebe has been upgraded to an Ultra5.

There are also new ports for those of you with laptops. There are ports on the wall at the P200, and a small blue box from NetGear with ports at the P60.

ssh1 and ssh2 have now been properly installed on all workstations. It is highly recommended that everyone use these to log in to outside machines.
To copy files securely, use scp (if your home machine has ssh2 installed) or scp1 (if only ssh is installed).

Both the Palomar 200" and 60" domes each have two workstations. The basic setup of all four workstations is as follows:

CPUMemoryPublic Disk SpaceTape Storage
Dione, Rhea, Leda
Sun Ultra1 167MHz128 Mb4.3Gb /scr + 3.0Gb /homeExabyte Eliant 820Se
Thebe
Sun Ultra5 360MHz196 Mb2.0Gb /scr + 2.0Gb /homeExabyte Eliant 820Se

Note that each machine has a totally independent software installation, so that changes made on one machine do not affect any of the others.
The public disk space is divided into two areas:

  • /home/user: For software, login files, etc. NOT FOR DATA. This space is not cleaned regularly, so no large files should be kept here.
  • /scr/user: For data only. Any files more than 10 days old are automatically deleted.

Printing facilities are also now available at both domes. PostScript files can be printed using lp or lpr, and text files can be printed with enscript.

There is also one CD Writer at each dome. For info on how to create CD-ROMS, click here.
Many software packages are also installed on each machine, including:

  • IDL 5.2
  • Netscape
  • IRAF
  • SAOtng
  • Emacs
  • Ghostview, ghostscript
  • Figaro
  • f77,gcc
Requests for additional software and problem reports should be sent to Roy Gal, rrg@astro.caltech.edu.

To ftp data from Oscar (the ccd control computer) to a workstation, remember to be user ccd, which owns the files on Oscar.
You can convert Figaro .dst files to fits files on the Suns by going to the directory with the images, and executing:
fig2fits *.dst
This will create fits files and not delete the .dst files.
