Long Gamma-Ray Bursts: A special type of supernova

A supermassive star ends it life as it collapses inward to form a black hole. Intense magnetic fields tear away the outer layers of the star causing jets of material to be accelerated outward at nearly the speed of light. If these jets are pointed toward the Earth a long gamma-ray burst is observed.
