Saturday October 06, 2012 7:00pm - 10:00pm

GUEST SPEAKER CHRISTOPH BARANEC AND STAR PARTY AT THE PALOMAR OUTREACH CENTER

Caltech's Christoph Baranec, principal investigator for the Robo-AO program

"Rise of the machines: Robo-AO and the evolution of adaptive optics."

Palomar Observatory's 60-inch telescope is host to Robo-AO, the first automated laser adaptive optics system in the world. By fully robotizing and sequencing this complex opto-electronic machine, we are able to execute large scale diffraction-limited visible imaging surveys that are not otherwise feasible or cost effective. A detailed description of the instrument and a discussion of current science programs will be presented.

Saturday October 20, 2012 7:00pm - 10:00pm

GUEST SPEAKER BRANIMIR SESAR AND STAR PARTY AT THE PALOMAR OUTREACH CENTER

"Galactic Archeology at Palomar"

"Conventional theory says that our Galaxy grew big by engulfing smaller galaxies. If this is correct, stars from the original galaxies should be still identifiable in the outer reaches of the Milky Way, as streams and clumps of stars. I will show how the Palomar Observatory telescopes are being used to uncover these distant stellar fossils and how Palomar is at forefront of the exciting new field of Galactic Archeology."

Please note that a Friends of Palomar Observatory membership is required to attend. Seating is limited and advance reservations are required for all evening events!

Call (760) 742-2111 or e-mail friendsofpalomar@astro.caltech.edu to make reservations.
