This document is meant to provide the new observer with an outline of general procedures for observers before an observing run. If you have further questions contact Jeff Hickey at Palomar (phone 760-742-2106) and/or the Palomar office on campus (phone 626 395-4033)).

Before the run:

  • No later than a month before your run, you will need to go on line and fill out your observing forms. Go to The Palomar Observer's Page , and click on Observer Log-in.

    1. You will find yourself at the log-in page. For the first time log-in you will need the "generic" password. Contact Anna Marie Hetman at Palomar Office on campus (626) 395-4003 for generic password. After your first log-in you will be able to change to a personal password. When you are awarded time by the TAC, your email address is put on the username list. If your username is not accepted contact Anna Marie Hetman for help.

    2. After logging-in you will need to fill out a couple of web forms. One is the "green sheet" instrumentation specification form, and the other is the Monastery reservation form. Both forms are very important, and if not filled out on time or filled out incorrectly, you will incur administrative wrath and financial penalties. The forms are accessible after the log-in.

    3. Also accessible after your log-in, is further Palomar procedural information. For the "first time observer" you will need to review the "Observatory Procedures". This page is linked under the Monastery Reservations header on the Home page. This page has maps and specific instructions for what to do on arrival.

    4. There is no longer a shuttle running from campus to Palomar. Travel to Palomar is solely the observer's responsibility. In some instances, special travel arrangements have been made through the on-campus office. Contact Anna Marie Hetman and she may be able to help.

    5. In preparation for your run, you should remember to pack:

      • Toiletries (soap and towels are provided)

      • DVD's, CD's, Data tapes (4mm or 8mm), whatever you prefer. DVD-R and CD-R are the best choices.

      • Flashlight and extra batteries

      • Appropriate clothing. It may be very cold and snowy in the winter. Shoes are very important. Palomar can get cold, icy, and wet, at any time of the year. A short term forecast that may be useful can be found here
