Volunteer Opportunities at Palomar Observatory
The Palomar Observatory's docent volunteers are an important component of its outreach efforts. The docents participate in a wide range of activities for the visiting public such as leading tours of the 200-inch Hale Telescope, conducting nighttime programs on the Palomar 60-inch telescope, answering questions, assisting visitors with exhibits and with daytime observing of the Sun. The observatory is looking for additional docents. Potential docents don't need to be an astronomer or a Palomar expert to apply. A willingness to learn and an interest in speaking to people is all that is needed. Applicants chosen for the docent program will receive all the training they will need. Training will include information on the current research and history of the Palomar Observatory, basic astronomy, working with the public and more. Selected docents may be invited to occasional evening visits at the Observatory as a part of their training, giving them the opportunity to see Palomar's telescopes and astronomers in action.
