This document describes how to properly close down the C-14 and the dome at the end of an evening of observing.

EYEPIECES
1. Remove any eyepieces from the telescope. If the eyepiece came in a container, be sure to restore it to the container.

Loosen the setscrew...

...extract the eyepiece...

...and return it to its home in the box.
2. If you used any of the filters, return them to their cases.

3. Replace the eyepiece plug in the eyepiece socket.

Put the film cannister back in. Tighten the setscrew just enough to keep the plug from sliding out.
4. Place the eyepieces and filters in their storage case, and put the case back on the south desk.

STOWING THE SCOPE
1. Turn off the clock drive and paddle controller at the power strip.

2. Put the aperture cover and eyepiece covers back on both the main scope and the finderscope.

Turn this off!

Replace the main dust cap...

...and the finder scope cap.

3. Point the telescope at zenith (straight up).

CLOSING THE DOME
1. Turn the slit wheel CCW to close the slit. (You may want to rotate the dome to a position where the wheel can be reached easily.) There will be some resistance over the last 5 cm of closing. Keep turning until the slit edges are flush against each other.

Turn the wheel to close the dome.

MAKE SURE that the dome slit is fully closed, like this.

2. Rotate the dome so that the slit points roughly west. If you do not, then leaks in the back of the dome slit will make the computer wet the next time it rains, and that is Really Bad (TM).

3. Sign your observing team into the logbook. If you feel motivated, include details on the objects you observed, and the observing conditions. At the very least, note your name(s) and the date.

4. Take a last look around the dome to check for anything left behind or left powered on (like the CD player).

5. Turn off all lights, and close the door securely.

6. If you encountered any problems or have suggestions for the rooftop observing facilities, send email to Luke.

7. Return the key ring to Room 211 as early as possible the next day, and have the secretary sign you off the list. You are responsible for the contents of the dome until the keys are back in official hands.
