PC/Laptop ResourcesThe following information is provided for those users who are managing their own Intel-compatible PC, be that either a desktop or a laptop system. The following links should help you make your system both more useful and more secure.
Windows Operating SystemsThe links below contain information and a number of important PC tools which should be pertinent to the Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP operating systems. We strongly recommend all users upgrade their Windows machines to at least Windows 2000, for improved stability and security. (Academic and research users, see the "Microsoft Academic Alliance Summary" for free upgrade information.)Microsoft Office is now available through the campus Microsoft agreement.
Linux Operating SystemsThe links below contain information and a number of important PC tools which should be pertinent to Linux operating systems. We strongly recommend the RedHat 7.3 Linux distribution, for improved stability, security, and interoperability with the ADPF Linux computers. (We have copies of the RedHat 8 and 7.3 CD-ROMs, as well as the Partition Magic 7.0 package for disk partitioning, which can be checked out from Robinson 10/11.)
