The Caltech Astronomy Department has a new wide-format printer, an HP DesignJet 5500PS. It can print on paper up to 42" wide. It is located in the server room (Robinson 53), inside the computer lab (Robinson 52) in the first basement. It is currently loaded with 42" semi-gloss photo paper. Astronomy department users may print to this printer with the queue, "posterastro". Users from departments other than Astronomy should contact Patrick Shopbell (Rob 10) or Cheryl (Rob 11) or Anu (Rob 053) before sending their job to printer. Note that the file to be printed must be the size you want for the output! Be sure to check both the "Page Setup", to make sure that the document is the correct size, and the "Paper Size", to make sure that the paper being printed on is large enough to accomodate the document.
Instructions for common tasks associated with the printer, such as
changing the paper roll, are provided in the "Quick Reference Guide"
to the printer, which can be found in the small bin on the right end
of the printer itself. Please see Patrick Shopbell (Rob 10, x4097) or
Anu (Rob 053, x4006) for assistance.
Accounting is done on the honor system. There is a clipboard on the
printer, where you can write down how much you have printed, and what
account to bill. The charge will be $5 ($10 - for non-astro users) per
linear foot; that is, a 4 ft. x 4 ft. poster will be billed at $20 ($40 -
for non-astro users).
