Telecommunications within 02 Robinson

Room 02 is the astronomical remote observing room, currently used for remote observations with the Keck Telescopes. When the room is not in user for remote observing, the videoconferencing system is available for other applications.
  • Teleconferencing:

    Telephone voice line: (626) 395 8503

  • Videoconferencing:

    • Video Feed:

The ViewStation 512MP teleconferencing equipment is made by Polycom, Inc. and supports both H.320 (ISDN) and H.323 (IP) videoconferencing standards, using three ISDN lines and one IP port. Remote sites supporting these standards can connect through either the ISDN lines:

      ViewStation IDSN line #1:(626) 744 1723/24
      ViewStation IDSN line #2:(626) 744 2908/20
      ViewStation IDSN line #3:(626) 744 2935/38

      or the IP address:

      ViewStation IP:131.215.103.55

Remote sites having multiple ISDN lines can connect to more than one of the ISDN lines simultaneously for aggregate bandwidth (up to 384 kbit/s vs. 128 kbit/s). Simultaneous connection to two sites, one per each of the ISDN lines, is also possible, as is a multipoint conference via IP. Unlike the videoconferencing system in room 012/023, multipoint conferences to this unit must be initiated by a third party, such as Keck. A videoconference may not use both the ISDN and IP connections at the same time.

Caveat: The ISDN lines in room 02 are often used for a failover network system for remote observing and may not be connected to the videoconferencing system by default. If this seems to be the case, or for further information on the videoconferencing system, including more advanced procedures, send e-mail to help@astro.caltech.edu.

  • IP ports:

Robinson 02 has a small network hub with a few available IP ports (+1 for the videoconferencing equipment) that allow one to connect to the campus CITNET 2000 network. Any machine configured for DHCP will work if plugged into one of these ports.
