Observational catalogue, GOODS-North

Many people requested to have a next test step that involves real data. While this is not the most systematic route it is probably the most exciting. We can still go one or two steps back with dedicated simulations later. arti mimpi Peter Capak has compiled a catalogue with observational data from the GOODS-North field which you can download here together with the filter curves:


The catalogue contains photometry in 18 bands for 1984 objects originating from different observing programmes and spanning a wide redshift range.

  • Redshift Distribution:

One quarter of the objects comes with spectroscopic redshifts for training purposes. All other objects have their redshift set to z=-9.999. It is clear from the discussions on the first simulations that ~500 objects with spectroscopic redshifts are not sufficient to train most empirical codes on the data. Nevertheless, we would like to encourage all people using empirical codes to try to get the best possible redshifts out of the data. They might not be competitive with template-based results in the end, but it is interesting in its own right what can be done with this limited amount of information.

Photometry is available in the bands U (KPNO), BVRIZ (Subaru), JH (WFCAM), H/K, K () F435W, F606W, F775W, F850LP (ACS), and in the four Spitzer bands. Please run your code twice, once including the Spitzer photometry and once excluding it. Send the results to hendrik[at]strw.leidenuniv.nl.
