The Search for AM CVn Systems with the Palomar Transient Factory

I will present my search for AM CVn systems - extremely rare, semi-detached,
ultra-compact binaries with orbital periods of 20-40 min. Using the Palomar
Transient Factory, we have identified 7 new systems (20% of the known sample).
These systems are unique, as they are the first, systematically-selected
sample of a significant number of AM CVn systems that is not selected by
colors. I will describe our selection process, follow-up observations to
better understand the properties of these systems, and our work on verifying
current AM CVn population models using these new systems.
