1 Mar 2004: Their is a new claim for the highest redshift. This is a galaxy at z+10 discovered using Gravitational lensing. Various parameters related to the galaxy can be found by using Ned Wright's Cosmology tutorial. Ned Wright's Cosmology tutorial
Watched Frank Capra's "You can't take it with you". I am liking him more and more. You can't take it with you (1938)

2 Mar 2004: Anu gave me a book on problems in number theory for my birthday. Besides the well known interesting items, there are many other interesting items I have been blissfully unaware of. Egyptian fractions is an example. They had symbols for reciprocals of integers and represented other fractions in terms of these. One of the open problems is to express 4/n as a sum of 3 egyptian fractions (i.e show that it is possible for any n > 1) Egyptian fractions
The Erdos-Strauss Conjecture
Watched "The Blairwitch project". I wish the language wasn't so sucking. Its an interesting concept. It couln't have been any longer though. One could perhaps do a better job by eliminating the obvious supernatural. Perhaps like "Eka bhutacha janm". Blair witch project (1999)
3 Mar 2004: Attended Google's Peter Norvig's talk on "Search engine strategies". Less mathematical than I had hoped. Cloaking was an interesting concept he talked about. Peter Norvig
cloaking etc.
Where are Indian Mathematician's these days? Looking at the past, they seem to have been aplenty besides the Greek and Arabic ones. A timeline of mathematicians
Learnt about the Charles Bonnet syndrome in which you can lose sight due to a problem somewhere in the optic connection and can have very vivid hallucinations. James Thurber perhaps had it as may be apparently surmised from his "Secret life of Walter Mitty". Charles Bonnet syndrome

Watched "My man Godfrey". It is good, but I will not call it great. The acting is good. My man Godfrey (1936)
5 Mar 2004: Harold Cohen Aaron, Kitch art
6 Mar 2004: Watched "Hungama". It is a good timepass. Don't ask too many logical questions. Hungama (2003)
7 Mar 2004: Newport beach (Balboa)
8 Mar 2004: Got a few stamps last week. Getting interested again. SoCal stamp shows
9 Mar 2004: Located a coin club at Glendale. Am likely to visit them on Friday with Jay. GlenCoin
10 Mar 2004: Found a very nice site that teaches elementary concepts of particles and forces. Particle Adventure
The reason why there are 8 rather than 9 gluons (from usenet physics FAQ which also links to many other FAQs). SU(3), linear combinations and all that

Wolfram dabbles everywhere. Wolfram's Astrophysics
About different string theories, its maths, cosmology etc. Gentle intro to superstrings
11 Mar 2004: From a mail by Christoph Froehlich to the topicmapmail about visualization software besides omnigator:
TMNav uses touchgraph to visualize xtm-files. Its a subproject of tm4j, the current release is 0.2.7a. It reads either xtm or ltm-files.
Hypergraph is an applet to visualize graphs, in a the-brain-style. It has support to visualize topicmaps too.
TM3D uses an 3D-approach.
TMNav and Hypergraph are open source, TM3D may not be

15 Mar 2004: Looking at groups and symmetries. Dihedral groups are made around rotations and reflections and "have to do" with planar objects. Graphic examples of dihedral groups
Geometry junkyard's Symmetry and Group theory
16 Mar 2004: Our own Jon Feenstra is in the birding records with a Big Year. Jon's Big Year
18 Mar 2004: Violence has broken out again in Kosovo. An email from Milan says that the army is on high alert. What is he doing out there when we want him to do so much work here? Some one should make the violent people see sense. violence in Kosovo
21 Mar 2004: Following up on cards I had started making for fundamental particles for Jay, we started making LEGO structures yesterday. Today it occured to me that a pack of cards would be ideal: Leptons = clubs (1..12), quarks = diamonds, hearts and spades (3 colors) gluon == club ace, the 3 other aces being electroweak mediators, photon is the joker, and the graviton does not figure in the "standard" pack.
clubs that total 13 are a bad sign and annhilate each other. However, diamonds, hearts and spades that total 13 just form mesons. 1-6 of DHS can combine into colorless baryons, and 7-12 into antibaryons.
25 Mar 2004: Investigated printing specia cards for the particle game. Most places want you to buy the cards in bulk and hence are not economical. But they seem ready to do everything for you once you handover the artwork.
Plaincards.com may be an interesting thing to try. Its a free program that allows you to make cards. To print you need to register it for 10 USD.

25 Mar 2004: We had been to Bishop with Patrick-Marcia to attend the OVRO party. The Sierra Nevada looked serene in the distance. Went upto 10K towards the bristlecone pine forest, but the road was closed beyond that (though the snow was only sporadic). Bristlecones

28 Mar 2004: Watched Frank Capra's "Lady for a day". Its good. Some of its shades are seen in "Munnabhai MBBS". Lady for a day (1933)
30 Mar 2004: Bumped into Caltech's subscription to SciAm from a link from Altadena library. Had been editing my own magazenes. This is much more convenient. SciAm
31 Mar 2004: Finally beginning to dvelve deeper into pstricks (LaTeX package that utilizes ps) that Abhijit introduced me to. PSTricks
