May 2004: Jay participated in the PUSD math field day. Teams of 4 from grades 4 through 8. Written test consisting of 4 papers. 45 teams at his level. They came third in the district. The top team goes to LA and so on. Will get to see his papers in a few days. Photographs
May 2004: Sanjay had kept some Canada coins. Several different quarters. Discovered that Canada had been issuing a large number of different quarters. 12 each in 1992/1999/2000. Have only 6 of those 11/1999, 1,4,7,8,9/2000. 1999

May 2004: Watched comet 2001 Q4 (NEAT) with Patrick's Celestron 8-inch from Robinson rooftop. Also Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. The surrounding being bright, could not see the tail. JPL's comet page
May 2004: At Amit-Rama's place had occasion to meet Sadhana Sargam who happens to be Amit's relation.
May 2004: Attended talk by Saul Teukolsky on blackhole simulations. In the QA session Kip mentioned that Stephen Hawking may be ready to conceded a bet to Preskil taking back his claim that quantum information is completely lost to a blackhole during its evaporation.
May 2004: Watched "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind". A beautifully done non-linear movie that makes "ends" meet better than most time-travel movies. No grand stuff - perfect for seeing on TV. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
May 2004: Had a discussion of 4 chapters from Raymond Smullyan's "The Tao is silent".
Interesting, but obviously inconclusive. I think more new ideas and from different sources are needed.
My personal conclusion seems to be that it is good, but since it does not care if status quo is maintained, I would be for "abandoning" it sooner than later. I can always get back to it, but not vice versa.
May 2004: Was looking at Julia sets again today for fun (after seeing the xscreensaver) and ran into David Joyce's site which depicts some Mandelbrot sets after various inversions. Had a wild idea that perhaps such an inversion could provide an insight into Riemann's Zeta function and in turn the Goldbach conjecture (see 8th problem in Hilbert's address). A Julia set generator
