Aug 2005: Went to the PUSD GATE musical "My child will be a star [or else]". It was good just like last years "Wicked" (in which Jay had a small part). The children acted very professionally showing their talent and the hard work that has been put in. The topic could have been more to do with children and less hollywood style, but otherwise it was wonderful.
Aug 2005: Went to Pronita's "Rangpravesh" (Oddissi). It was a good evening, and the setting of the San Gabriel made it faboulous. It was a very famly kind of atmosphere with a dinner following the program. Perhapps because this makes it a little less formal, it also seemed a tad less rigourous. Pronita's performance was of course fantastic.
Aug 2005: At the flee market found Vols 2 and 3 of Knuth's series for a dollar each. Also vol 2 of Polya.
Aug 2005: Watched "Suraj ka santwa ghoda" at the Caltech open air cinema. Though slightly slow, liked the way Shyam Benegal has intertwined the lives of his characters with fact mixing into fiction and virtues taking a backseat as core qualities of human nature get into the driver's seat. The characters are simple and too easy to identify with - but not trivial. As Manik mentions, he does not need great effects as what is to be shown has substance. He has used good references to other Indian literature which is rarely seen elsewhere. Suraj ka santwa ghoda (1993)
Aug 2005: Read Terry Pratchet's "Lords and Ladies". While it makes you smile at times, thumbs down in general. My first "3 witches" book. I do not think I will read another. Diskworld is not what it used to be.
Aug 2005: Got the Minnesota (D) quarter. The newer quarters have kinda dried off. But clearly the frequency of the "older" new ones has gone up. There were 15 of those in a 10 dollar change that I got today.
Aug 2005: Watched "Secret Window". Liked it despite the slight excess of goriness. Secret Window (2004)
Aug 2005: Had to be at the MMLA picnic at Frank Bonneli Regional Park as an organiser. The sun helped by not being scortching. Got to swing the bat a bit.
Aug 2005: Played Duplicate Bridge for the first time. It was fun though we did not fare too well. As Alhad later said, we can only go up. Bridge

Aug 2005: From astronomy drifted to astrology. A friend remarked that he does not believe in it, but feels that its like crutches - people use it as a support. I had to say that I disagree and that its more like a metal ring around your legs - it drags healthy people back as against the crutches which help disabled people move.
Aug 2005: Close to the Minnesota quarter, also got the Oregon (D) quarter (from Matthew).
Aug 2005: Visited the Caltech Bridge Club for the first time (didn't play). The atmosphere here is completely different from the Country. Everyone is absolutely quiet and they play with bidding cards rather than oral bids. May start going once in a while.
Aug 2005: "Tesis" is about snuff films, made in to a thriller by the way the suspects are rotated using situations that the director choosses to depict. Okay, but not necessarily worth watching. Spanish. Tesis (1996)
Aug 2005: Watched episodes 23/24 of the original Star Trek. They are still great. Watching Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner (as also DeForest Kelley et al.) is a treat.
Aug 2005: Prompted by Yog's rangbirangi BB on hitguj, explored making ambigrams. Until seeing a site rapidly produce some, did not realize how simple making a barebones ambigram is. ambigrams
Aug 2005: Came across a well-written (yet not very well-balenced) article on cloning and Hinduism in NYT. I do not like articles that do not suggest a way out but just show problems in a particular approach in the vein that the roject itself should be dropped. India's cloning aspirations
Aug 2005: The cost of war in Iraq keeps escalating. This site shows how much it is (I do not know the algorithm, nor the variables) but its certainly a good concept. Cost of War
