The East-Arm Echelle

The East-Arm Echelle is a new instrument on the Palomar Hale 200" telescope, built using many parts from the echelle that formerly served on the Palomar 60" telescope. The EAE is a high-resolution spectrograph, capable of achieving spectral resolution of R~30000 over a wavelength range of 4000-10000 angstroms.

I have been the primary observer using the EAE since it was commissioned in the 2006B semester, so I'm using this webpage to compile information that may be useful to future observers.

Wavelength Calibration

The wavelength calibration on the EAE can be adjusted (with some work) to observe shorter or longer wavelength ranges. It is currently adjusted to the red end of its useful range, observing orders 1 through 52 (4006 through 10193 angstroms). Bluer wavelength ranges come at some cost - moving two orders blueward is sufficient to observe the Ca H&K lines, but this comes at the cost of ~3-4 red orders (since blue orders are spaced further apart), cutting the red limit to ~9100-9300 angstroms.
