• Halo substructures in the SDSS stripe 82. The animation is a flyby of the Milky Way's halo and shows the distribution of stars implied by the distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the SDSS strip 82 (see Sesar et al. 2010a for more information). The region of the halo probed by RR Lyrae stars (110 kpc in radius, pie plot) is shown with the proper orientation and scale with respect to the Galaxy. The color in the pie plot indicates overdense (red) and underdense (blue) regions in the halo with respect to the smooth distribution of stars (green). The white dots show the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and its tidal streams, as modeled by the Law, Johnston & Majewski (2005) [ApJ, 619, 807] spherical model. The four cones show Canada-France-Hawai'i Legacy Survey “Wide” beams used in Sesar, Jurić & Ivezić 2011 (high-quality version (8.3 MB) best viewed with VLC video player).

  • Messier 101 Supernova SN 2011fe (aka PTF11kly) before and after the explosion. The animated GIF shows a sequence of images taken with the Palomar 48-inch telescope by the Palomar Transient Factory survey (PTF). The images were taken between the nights of Aug 3rd and Sept 4th 2011 in the Mould-R band.
  • Halo substructures in the LINEAR. The animation is a is a flyby of the Milky Way's halo and shows the halo groups detected using RR Lyrae stars from the LINEAR survey (see Sesar et al. 2013 for more information). (high-quality version (8.3 MB) best viewed with VLC video player).
