Interplay of Large Scale Structure and Galaxy Formation

Using the zCOSMOS spectroscopic survey and the high-precison photometric redshifts in the COSMOS survey we can measure the effects of large-scale structure on galaxy formation with un-precidented accuracy. We are actively engaged in several studies of mass buildup, star-formation, morphology and other properteis as a function of environment.

Evolution of the Morphology Density Relation

Using the wide area COSMOS survey we studied the influence of Environment on the morphological evolution of galaxies. We found galaxies are trasformed into early type galaxies more rapidly in dense environements than sparse ones, however the rate of star formation quenching did not appear to depend on environment. We intepret this as an indication that dynamical harassment is driving the morphological evolution.
