Evolution of Passive Galaxies at z<2

Using the wide field HST data in the COSMOS field I have assembled a sample of >10,000 passive systems at z<2. In addition to analyzing the evolution of global properties like the luminosity function, I am looking for changes in detailed properties like the shape and color of the light profile to better understand the evolution of these galaxies. I amalso trying to link these galaxies to higher-redshift star bursting systems via dynamical, morphological, and star formation history arguments.

Past Projects

Interplay of Large Scale Structure and Galaxy Formation

Main Collaborators: COSMOS collaboration

Using the zCOSMOS spectroscopic survey and the high-precison photometric redshifts in the COSMOS survey we can measure the effects of large-scale structure on galaxy formation with un-precidented accuracy. We are actively engaged in several studies of mass buildup, star-formation, morphology and other properteis as a function of environment.

Evolution of the Morphology Density Relation

Main Collaborators: Richard Ellis, Nick Scoville

Using the wide area COSMOS survey we studied the influence of Environment on the morphological evolution of galaxies. We found galaxies are trasformed into early type galaxies more rapidly in dense environements than sparse ones, however the rate of star formation quenching did not appear to depend on environment. We intepret this as an indication that dynamical harassment is driving the morphological evolution.
