Ay 122 - Class trip to Palomar, Thu. Oct. 24 1. Get the rides organized; probably 2-3 cars. Keep track of your mileage, and you'll get reimbursed. 2. Print the maps linked on the class webpage. 3. Bring warm clothes, even if it is a warm day. It is much cooler at Palomar than in Pasadena, especially at night. 4. Try to leave Pasadena by 12:30 pm, and absolutely no later than 1 pm. The trip will take ~ 2.5 hours with no stops. Here are the driving instructions: Take 210 East, until it ends at I-15 Take 15 South, past Temecula, the road goes up the hill, then down; and approx. 100 miles from Pasadena, take the exit to CA-76 Take 76 East, past the casino in Pala; take care to bear left at Rincon; and don't miss the left turn to S-6 (follow the signs to Palomar) Take S-6 (a very wiggly road) all the way to the summit of Palomar. Turn left (not the sharp left), go past the store, restaurant, and the post office (all of them on your left). In a few miles you will reach the Observatory gates. Take the right one ("restricted access"), not the visitor center one. At the P200 dome turn left. Past the interferometer turn right. You'll end in the parking lot of the Monastery. Park and look for me inside. If you get lost, call Palomar: (760) 742-2106 [P200], -2116 [Monastery] or -2100 [office] 5. We'll visit all the telescope, have a dinner, and then you can see the start of the observing. 6. By about 8 pm you'll be on your way back.
