Class trip to Palomar - Sunday, October 10 ------------------------------------------ Please start from Caltech by 1 pm. Meet in the driwevay behind Robinson. It will take you about 2.5 hours. Expect to be back by about 10-11 pm. Dress for a few degrees cooler than you would in Pasadena in the evening; maybe have an extra jacket/sweater. You can download the maps and driving instructions from http://www.astro.caltech.edu/palomar/driving.html Note that some of their suggestions may not be the optimal, some are obsolete, and that you should NOT go to the visitor lot when you get there. Here's how I'd go: From Pasadena, take 210 East all the way to I-15. Take I-15 South, past Temecula, to 76. This would be just over 100 miles from Pasadena. Turn left to 76 after the exit. Take 76 East for about 15-20 miles (past the Pala Casino). Anout 5 miles after Rincon, turn left to S6 (look for the Palomar signs). After a few wiggly miles, make another left turn (it is still road S6). That will take you to the summit of Palomar. You will emerge at an intersection. Go left, but not the leftmost-left. Pass the stores, the restaurant (Mother's Kitchen) and the small post office, all of which should be on your left. After about 5 miles you'll get to the Observatory gate. Take the upper fork ("private road, closed to public"); do not go to the visitor parking. Head towards the P200 dome. At the T-intersection, turn left. Go past the interferometer sheds, and turn right. You'll emerge in a small parking lot (the road continues), with a building on your left - that's the "Monastery" - and a carport on the right. Park, and look for me in the Monastery. See you on Sunday! George
