FRIDAY 28 September 2007 |
Joshua Edward Barnes (IfA, Hawaii)
"Matching models to merging galaxies: lost and found in parameter space" Galactic collisions provide an elegant explanation for peculiar galaxies, but very few collisions have been dynamically modeled. I describe a new approach to navigating the parameter space of galactic collisions and finding initial conditions which repro- duce the observed morphology and kinematics of peculiar galaxies. The method is tested on a randomly-generated sample of galactic collisions; in many cases it accurately recovers the initial conditions of these encounters. |
