Judd Bowman (Caltech)
" 'First Light' from New 21 cm Probes of the Dark Ages and Reionization" The application of the 21 cm hyperfine transition line of neutral hydrogen in the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) to probe cosmological reionization and the early universe is transitioning rapidly from the realm of theory to practice. The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and the Experiment to the Detect the Global EOR Signature (EDGES), among other projects, have recently passed important milestones. Assuming instrumental challenges and astrophysical foregrounds can be overcome, these experiments will soon provide rich new insights into the Dark Ages and reionization, while pathing the way to unique views of inflationary physics, large-scale structure, and even Dark Energy. |
