CURRENT
NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, 5071 West Saanich Road, Victoria, BC, CANADA, V9E 2E7

Postdoctoral Associate, Research Group of Dr. Laura Ferrarese and the NGVS team
May, 2009 - present
  • I am currently working with the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey team at NRC-HIA
Current Activities Include:
  • Develop a pipeline for the automated detection and characterization of the dwarf galaxy population in the Virgo Cluster of galaxies based on ugriz CFHT/MegaCam imaging covering 104 square degrees from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS: PI L. Ferrarese). For each detected object, the pipeline determines structural parameters (through iterative masking of projected sources and 2D model fitting), and Virgo membership assignment (through photometric redshifts, size, and surface brightness considerations).
  • Install all pipeline software on a Linux-based "Virtual Machine" to be run on the Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomical Research (CANFAR) computing cloud facility under development at the Canadian Astronomy Data Center (CADC). The pipeline software consists of a master Python script which also calls myriad routines in other languages (Fortran, Gnu Data Language [GDL: free and open-source IDL], IRAF, DS9, SuperMongo, Galfit, SourceExtractor, THELI, Le Phare, galapagos, Unix OS commands, etc...)
  • Develop and run simulations using CANFAR to accurately quantify completeness and detection limits of the automated pipeline.
  • Store and maintain all pipeline products in the CADC's Virtual Observatory storage infrastructure, VOSpace.
  • Provide detailed user feedback on performance and contribute to
  • testing and optimization of the CANFAR infrastructure.
  • Scientific analysis of the NGVS data including: faint-end slope of the Luminosity Function to provide constraints on cosmological models and the nature of dark matter, environmental effects on galaxy evolution through morphological analysis, scaling and colour-magnitude relations, and stellar population studies, the origin of compact stellar systems (including Globular Clusters and Ultra Compact Dwarfs) and their implications for galaxy formation and evolution, the stellar nucleus-supermassive black hole connection, etc.
Caltech, Department of Astronomy, MC 105-24, Pasadena, CA 91125

Postdoctoral Associate, Research Group of Prof. Richard Ellis
Oct 2005 - Oct 2008
  • My research focuses on galaxy formation and evolution from the observational point of view, with a particular focus on the formation and evolution of the spheroidal (bulge) components of spiral galaxies. Photometric and spectroscopic observations allow us to put constrains on the ages, metal content, and masses of the bulge stellar populations. In turn, these observational parameters are matched against models to place valuable constraints on the different formation scenarios. Understanding the formation of bulges is a key ingredient to our understanding of galaxy formation in general.
  • Calibration of stellar population models with integrated spectra of Globular Clusters
EDUCATION
University of British Columbia, Department of Physics & Astronomy, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Ph.D. in Astronomy, Supervisor: Prof. Stéphane Courteau
graduation date: July 25, 2005
  • My Ph.D. thesis research focused on stellar populations in spiral galaxies with the aim of constraining bulge formation scenarios (secular evolution versus monolithic collapse).
  • Collaborative research with Eric Bell (Max Planck Institut für Astronomie) on colour gradients in spiral galaxies, Jesús González (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) on radially resolved absorption line indices in spiral galaxies, Jim Rose (University of North Carolina) and Ricardo Schiavon (University of Virginia) on age and metal abundances in globular clusters from their integrated spectra, Guy Worthey (Washington State University) on the stellar populations in M31.
M.Sc. in Astronomy, Supervisor: Prof. Stéphane Courteau graduated Oct 2001
  • M.Sc. thesis research on structural parameters of local spiral galaxies using the largest multi-wavelength (optical-near IR) imaging sample (to date). Established major constraints for structure formation models.
University of Guelph, Department of Physics, Guelph, ON, Canada

B. Sc. in Chemical Physics, Specialized Honours, First-Class standing, Feb 1999
  • 4th-Year Thesis: Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy
My undergraduate honours thesis involved setting up the laser and optics for a cavity ring-down spectrometer, as well as writing data acquisition and analysis software.
