Sean has moved! Please visit my new (and slightly updated home page at Johns Hopkins University.

Research

My research interests include looking for signatures of galaxy evolution in the populations of distant galaxy clusters (like the one pictured at right, Cl 0024). The properties of galaxies found deep in the densest parts of clusters tend to be very different from those of galaxies found outside of such environments. My thesis work centers on a survey of galaxies in two clusters at intermediate redshift, with the aim of studying how a galaxy's properties can be affected and transformed by its environment. Using optical spectroscopy from the DEIMOS instrument on the Keck II telescope, along with a large set of images from the Hubble Space Telescope, we are tracing the detailed properties of galaxies across a wide range of environments-from the dense cluster cores to the outskirts nearly 5 Mpc away. My completed thesis will soon be downloadable from here. If you are interested in the data products from our survey of Cl 0024 and MS 0451, please see our page here.

Other Interests

Skiing

Growing up in New England, I learned to love skiing, but I've been amazed to see how infinitely better skiing is out here in the West. I'm the grad student in charge of planning the annual astronomy department ski trip. Most years, we head up through the Owens Valley to Mammoth Mountain, or its quieter neighbor June Lake.

Sailing

I used to race small sailboats like these. But nowadays I'm content to rent a boat for the afternoon every once in a while. I'd love to spend some time learning to handle larger boats, so I can charter a yacht for a vacation someday.

Photography

I have an amateur interest in photography; right now, I'm mostly playing around with my shooting technique using my Canon S60 camera. I come up with a few decent shots, but I'm still learning by trial and error. I got some nice shots on our recent honeymoon trip to Tahiti; you can take a look at a small gallery of my favorites here.
