'Building the Red Sequence'
The formation of the red sequence remains a challenge for models of
galaxy evolution. We test simplified models of star formation
quenching, including quenching based on mergers or a critical halo
mass, in a cosmological context with fully hydrodynamic simulations.
Due to difficulties with resolution and uncertainties in accretion
physics, we avoid specifically invoking supermassive black holes in
our models. Instead, we try to approximate the effects of feedback
required to create the red sequence. Through a post-processing
technique, we learn that either merger quenching or halo mass
quenching can create a red sequence, but in detail there are
difficulties with each. I will briefly describe ongoing efforts to
construct self-consistent models that run on-the-fly in the
simulations.
