Fast Radio Transients

I will discuss fast radio transients, i.e radio signals which vary, burst, repeat or 'go bang' on timescales as long as seconds down to the fastest measurable scales. I will describe some key discoveries from the last decade - in particular studies of neutron stars with erratic radio emission and a recently discovered, but as yet unexplained, radio burst. Then I look to the future with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) - LOFAR is set to revolutionise studies of radio transients (and more besides), with 2012 seeing the launch of LOFAR v1.0. I will describe some of the initial results from commissioning, and describe the future plans for transient studies.
