Machine vision (MV) is the general name given to the methods used for automatic inspection and analysis of images, from pattern recognition to object classification. This talk will present the application of MV techniques to study the formation and evolution of star-forming clouds in the Milky Way, both in observations and numerical simulations. I will present three examples in which the MV techniques reveal the dynamical behavior of the interstellar medium. First, the filamentary structure of the atomic hydrogen (HI) emission observations at 21 cm in the THOR survey of the Galactic plane. Second, the correlation between the HI and the emission from molecular species. Finally, the velocity field anisotropy in and around star-forming clouds and its relation to the interstellar magnetic fields.
