Using the Cahill Network
Wired connections :
DHCP: If you're connecting to the Internet from a campus office or lab, just connect your PC/laptop to one of the labeled wall ports. Do not use the "last" (furthest right and down) port in a set, as that is reserved for a telephone. Wall ports are by default configured to provide a DHCP address.
STATIC: If you need to use a static IP for your computer, please send your request to help [at] astro.caltech.edu. We will need to know the location and name of the computer, in order to obtain a static IP address for you.
IMSS has a good document on how to troubleshoot some common network problems.
Using wireless :
IMSS manages the wireless networks on the Caltech campus.
- If you have an IMSS (access.caltech) account, you can use "Caltech Secure".
- If you have registered the MAC address of your PC/laptop with IMSS, then you can use the wireless network "Caltech Registered". This network is primarily reserved for networked devices other than computers.
- Otherwise, you can use the "Caltech Guest" wireless network, which does not require any authentication, but it only passes HTTP, HTTPS, SSH and VPN traffic. You will likely find that the Guest wireless network is very slow.
Please check detailed and most recent information on the Caltech campus wireless networks.
