Deciphering Accretion in Cataclysmic Variables
Paula Szkody, Professor, Department of Astronomy, University of Washington,

The close binaries containing a white dwarf primary and undergoing active accretion that are called Cataclysmic Variables have been known for more than 70 years. While much has been learned about how accretion occurs (and stops) in these systems, there are still many remaining questions that center around their magnetic fields and angular momentum losses. The use of UV and high time resolution continuous coverage from satellites has provided both intriguing data as well as further conundrums. Some recent results will be presented and what is needed for the future.
